Lifetime Community Rating (LCR) was introduced by the government as of 01/05/2015.
LCR is an intiative to encourage younger people to take out health insurance earlier to keep the costs of health insurance affordable for everyone. As of May 2015 anybody purchasing a private health insurance policy for the first time at age 35 years or older will pay a 2% loading on top of their premium for every year you are aged over 34 up to a maximum of 70%.

There are certain exemptions:
- If you have held health insurance in the past (paying an adult premium), this period will become a qualified credited period.
- If you have received certain types of social welfare payments or have been financially dependent on someone who has received such payments, you may be entitled to receive credits.
- If you live outside Ireland and move to Ireland, a loading will not apply if you get health insurance within nine months of arriving here continue to be insured.
